Arva FAQ

Our Flours

What is the best flour for sourdough bread and general baking?
Our Daisy Hard Unbleached Flour is our most popular flour for sourdough and general baking. Its high protein content supports strong gluten development and delivers a beautiful, open crumb — perfect for rustic country loaves and everyday bakes.
Which flour should I use for Italian-style artisan bread?
For Italian-style artisan loaves, we recommend our Arva Unbleached Bread Flour. Its higher protein content delivers the gluten development, structure, and classic chewy interior you need for a great artisan loaf.
Are your flours non-GMO and locally sourced?
Yes. We mill natural heritage flour from non-GMO wheat sourced from small, nearby family-owned and operated farms — the same farms that have supplied us for generations. Farming to your table since 1819, long before it was a trend.

Baking Mixes

The oatmeal cookie mix says 3 cups mix to ¼ cup water. Is that really all I need — no egg or butter?
Yes — just follow the instructions on the label. Our mixes are designed to be simple and convenient. We hope you enjoy them!
What are your most popular baking mixes?
Customer favourites include:
  • Cornbread Mix — golden and tender, great with soups and chili
  • Red Fife Pancake Mix — fluffy stacks with a rich, nutty flavour
  • Beer Bread Mix — hearty and easy, no yeast required
  • Red Fife Scone Mix — light, buttery scones ready for jam or tea

Red River Cereal

Has the Red River cereal recipe changed? We've noticed a difference in taste.
No changes have been made. There are only four ingredients in the Original Red River cereal, and strict production protocols are followed with every batch. If you've noticed something different, please contact us with your lot number and best-before date and we'll look into it right away.
Do you ship Red River Cereal to the United States?
Yes — Red River Cereal is currently the only product we ship to the US. Most other products (flours, baking mixes) are available for delivery within Canada only. We apologize for any inconvenience.

About the Mill

How long has Arva Flour Mills been in operation?
Arva Flour Mills was established in 1819 on the banks of Medway Creek in Arva, Ontario — just north of London. The mill has been in continuous operation for over 207 years, making it Canada's oldest commercial flour mill, Canada's 5th oldest continuously operating business, and perhaps the oldest food-producing company in the country. Unlike most heritage mills, we have never ceased operations.
How is the flour milled?
We produce a truly artisan flour using our antique Goldie & McCullough cold roller mills — built in 1901, replacing the original stone ground grist mills, and still running today. These mills may be the last of their vintage found anywhere in North America. The result is a flour that simply can't be replicated by modern mills.
Is Arva flour really fresher than store-bought flour?
Yes — significantly. We mill from wheat sourced from the same small nearby farms that have supplied us for two centuries. When you order Arva flour, you're receiving flour that has not been sitting on a shelf or in a warehouse for weeks or months. We mill the way of bygone years: slow, careful, and fresh.
Can I visit or tour the mill?
Yes! The mill welcomes individuals, school groups, and organizations for tours. Many visitors are surprised to find it's a fully operating production facility — not a museum! Contact us at admin@arvaflourmills.com to arrange a visit.
